Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry which mainly focuses on improving one's appearance and oral health by alignment of teeth and jaws. The diagnosis and treatment avoid irregularities of teeth with the use of dental braces. These dental appliances are used to straighten teeth, close unattractive gaps, correct irregular gaps and move the teeth correct position.
Can adults wear dental braces?
Dental braces these days have improved a lot in many ways. Dental braces or orthodontic appliances now have a more attractive appearance and more importantly can be unnoticed because of their appearance. However, many people still have an ambiguity in their mind whether adults can wear braces? The answer is yes, it is not too late to improve the appearance of your smile and dental health.
The problems associated with misaligned teeth may impact on teeth in many ways, ranging from tooth decay to serious gum disease. Thus, dental braces treatment is very essential and it is not just for the teenagers.
The answer lies with your dentist. Ask the dentist for an evaluation. If you require the treatment then you would be referred to an orthodontist depending on whether or not the dentist can perform orthodontic work.
Duration of treatment: This is the most obvious question which can be clarified by your orthodontist. The treatment on average can consume about two years, according to AAO. However depending on the severity it can take longer time.
Available Options: Make sure you ask this question. If you are a teenager you might be worried about showing your teeth with traditional braces. But traditional braces aren't the only choice. You can opt for a better choice. You can wear less visible braces which are tooth colored. Another great option can be lingual braces which are fixed on the back surface of the tooth.
Dealing With Discomfort?
After receiving braces you might experience some amount of discomfort in speaking and eating. You will get used to it in few days. The thing which is of concern is keeping the teeth and brackets clean. If you have received non-removable braces then food and plaque can often get trapped. You can remove the trapped particles by brushing and flossing.
Floss: Make a routine of flossing regularly as it is very important during orthodontics treatment. Your orthodontist may recommend few tips on how to floss while you are undergoing treatment.
Brushing: Use of fluoride toothpaste and soft bristle toothbrush are essential to clean teeth with braces. Once again your orthodontist or hygienist will help you know how to brush teeth by using different angles at gum line and brackets.
Fluoride mouthwash: After brushing and flossing use mouthwash to rinse your mouth to help prevent cavities and white spots.
Avoid hard foods: Avoid foods that can damage or dislodge braces. It can be raw carrot, nuts, popcorn, ice and others.
Mouthguard: Wear a mouthguard while you play sports. With mouthguard you can protect your cheeks, lips and braces from damage.
